Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get debt advice from HMA?

Nothing. HMA is a charitable project and no charges are made.

Will you take responsibility for my debts?

No. We will not take any money from you nor pay any of your debts off. We will advise you how to go about paying your debts off and walk with you through the process.

Can you write off my debts?

In the majority of cases we will help you deal with debts through a repayment plan, which minimises the impact of debt on your personal circumstances. However, if it proved necessary to look at an insolvency solution, we can help you file for bankruptcy, or refer you to reputable administrators of Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) and Debt Relief Orders (DROs).

Where do you do debt advice?

We use office locations in central Harlesden which allow for a confidential meeting.

Who do you help?

Anyone who is serious about sorting out their financial situation.

Will you tell anyone about my situation?

No. Any information you give us will be kept confidential. We will only approach your creditors (people who have lent you money) with your permission and written authorization.

Do I have to do what you advise me to?

Yes and no. You don’t have to take our advice but once you have signed a statement to say that you will pay back your creditors at a certain rate, it is important that you stick to this agreement or let us know if you cannot pay.

What qualifies you to give debt advice?

HMA advisors are trained by Community Money Advice. HMA is licensed by the Office of Fair Trading to give debt advice.
